Over the past few years, I’ve been on a mission to redefine the notion of “retirement” as the period in our lives when we no longer require employment to meet our financial needs. Words like “freedom,” “independence,” “work-optional,” and “flexible” paint a clearer picture of the vision I have for this period in our lives.
I was recently introduced to the book Financial Freedom by Grant Sabatier. An influential figure in the FIRE movement (Financial Independence, Retire Early), Grant provides great insights into strategies for achieving the tenants of the FIRE movement. The infographic below shows progression through 7 levels of financial freedom.

Let’s delve into a few of these levels, starting with Level 2 – Self-sufficiency. Many Americans find themselves here, navigating paycheck to paycheck. While no longer reliant on external support, individuals at this stage often lack substantial savings, making them vulnerable to even minor financial setbacks. Despite financial constraints, opportunities for personal growth still exist through volunteering and continued education, readily accessible at little expense through public libraries and audiobook resources.
Moving on to Level 5 – Flexibility, we encounter a realm where financial resources become a tool for extending the duration between work commitments. Actor Dean Norris, best known for his role in Breaking Bad, in a recent interview by Carl Richards on X, said, “money was just a function of how many months I could go without working. So as long as I kept my frugality combined with the more money making allowed me to have x number more months of not having to work”. At level 5, financial flexibility allows individuals to engage in service, experiencing, giving, and achieving more fully.
Then, there’s Level 6 – Financial Independence. At this level, passive and/or investment income covers all personal and philanthropic expenses. The achievement of this level marks a profound shift from financial stress to liberation, where one’s resources become a force for positive impact.
In the winding path of our financial journey, these 7 levels of financial freedom offer unique opportunities and challenges. As we strive toward abundant wealth, let’s not merely retire; let’s embrace the freedom to serve, experience, give, and achieve.
